Stargate Fan Awards Technical Briefing
Does that sound sufficiently important? :-)

Seriously, though, there are quite a few folks having a weird technical
problem getting the voting site to load completely. I'm going to pass on
the fix here and ask (um, *beg*??) everyone to spread the word.

If you go to the voting page and get a blank page or just the banner
across the top, try this:

clear your cache
clear your cookies
delete your temporary internet files
close your browser
open your browser
go to http://www.stargate fanawards. com/2007/ index.php
register or log in (as appropriate)

If it still won't load completely, hit a control f5 to try and force your
browser to go back to our server for the page data rather than to wherever
it's trying, and failing, to get it.

Also, if you go to what you think is the right page, but the only login is
labeled "Admin login" you're on the wrong page. ;-) See link above.

Thanks folks!

Um... I hate to be nitpicky but... Do you realize that I have to go through this every. Single. Time. I want to access that page? Or if my login happens to time out while I'm reading a fic?

I hate to be cranky, but this happened to me this afternoon. It's really discouraging and frustrating and since I use Firefox, it means I don't only have to shut your page, but *every* other tab I have open to restart the browser.

I've never had this problem with any other website or page I've tried to access.

Thanks. I appreciate if you could possibly find the time to look into it. I'd love to vote in all the categories, but I find my enthusiasm dwindling when I have to keep shutting everything down every hour or so.

Really? Everyone else I've talked to said it fixed their problems :(

Humor me for a minute and do the steps again and see if it works now. Our webmistress removed the "Remember Me" option tonight because some Firefox and Netscape people were having cache issues with it (something about ISP caches or something- I'm so not a tech person!), so maybe since you're a Firefox person it might help?

If it doesn't help, email our tech girls web@stargatefanawards.com because this is a new problem I haven't heard of.

O-kay, I wrote to the Awards team a few days ago because of having this same issue (thanks for the prompt reply guys!). I have my Firefox set so that it keeps nothing - no history, no cache, no temp files... nothing except cookies. Only once I deleted all the cookies, I managed to get the properly displayed and loaded page (clearing everything BUT cookies resulted in the repeat of the same problem). So, it appears that the cookies are not only bad for your weight, they're bad for your Net-surfing, as well.
Anyway, it works now. *keeps fingers and toes crossed*

LOL, :D Yeah, Firefox is being horrible with our coding this year. We're trying to tweak things to make it more compatible but it sounds like if you've found what works then stick with it! *fingers crossed for no more issues* Have fun voting!

I have tried everything suggested here, plus I've tried accessing the site from two entirely different computers in the house from which I know for a fact I've never accessed the site. Nothing. I've tried Firefox, Netscape, and a stripped down browser I use to test code.

I'm getting nowhere, and also am getting bloody tired of having to log into my email, ebay, etc., all over again, every single time I try to get into the site.

Can you post some sort of announcement to the comms when this issue gets resolved?

As far as I know, the main issues have been resolved. Our tech girls are handling individual problems now, but they aren't seeing widespread browser issues anymore. I'd suggest emailing them: web@stargatefanawards.com .

Wanted to share that I was having all of the problems mentioned, even after following the techie suggestions re: cache, cookies, etc, until I changed my Internet Explorer access from my ISP (Earthlink) to Yahoo & then re-started the computer. Although there are still some quirks (the LJ link isn't there; had to do this manually), I'm at least able to read the nominees and vote!

I also had these problems with Firefox. I think I've found the easiest fix so far...at least it worked for me. I simply copied the address above, opened a new session of Explorer (doesn't almost everyone have it anyway even if you don't use it?), copied the address into the bar, removed the spaces and clicked "go". It worked great from there. And I didn't have to do anything with cookies or caches or lions, tigers or bears. Hope it helps someone out there! Enjoy.

I got the browser to finaly work ( or rather Siler did...thanks Siler!) and found within a couple of minutes I was back to a beige screen with banner. So I cleared the cache etc again and I opened a link to every single category I was interested in. Then I copied all the links off the pages into a spreadsheet and started my own vote system. Once I've got votes for all the categories THEN I'll log-in again to officially vote. I can't be bothered clearing the cookies/cache every damn time, it means I have to log into over 20 sites afterwards... that's the whole reason for keeping cookies in the first place, so you don't have to log in again and again.

For anyone who wants to do the same ( in Firefox and netscape)and doesn't want to click/copy/paste each link right click the page and chose View page info. Then the Links tab and just get rid of the dross and keep the links to the stories.

For IE, also check your Tools > Internet Options > Advance and scroll down until you see the information below. Make sure TLS 1.0 is checked.

For Firefox, got to Tools > Options > Advanced > Encryption and make sure TLS 1.0 is checked.

If TLS 1.0 is not checked, it is known to cause some problems with some websites. It still might not fix the problem but it's an idea, simple to try and it won't hurt.
