2007 Stargate Fan Awards
View Winners Here: http://www.stargatefanawards.com/2007/winners.php

We're sure many of you thought this day would never come -- some of the team were starting to wonder, too -- but we're finally ready to announce the winners of the 2007 Stargate Fan Awards!

That's right -- after compiling nearly 17,000 votes cast by over 3000 people for some 2500 nominations in a total of 276 categories -- we have the winners as chosen by you, the fans.

Head on over to http://www.stargatefanawards.com/2007 to see how your favorite authors, artists, vidders, and sites did this year. Select "2007 Winners" in the top navigation bar.

While you're there, don't forget to take a look at the winners of this year's Team Choice Awards which represent our team members' favorite works!

Congratulations to all the winners! Your banners will be ready within the week, so be sure to check back.

The awards team members would like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who participated -- nominators, nominees, and voters alike -- for so graciously dealing with our unexpected (and numerous!) delays this year as we improved our system and struggled through real life issues. We know it was as frustrating for you as it was for us. We truly appreciate the words of support and encouragement that we received along the way from you. We hope that it's been worth the wait!

In order to get back on track with the awards, we will begin accepting 2008 nominations within the next few weeks! Start gathering your favorite fan works from throughout the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis fandom!

Thanks for your support, and don't forget to get those 2008 nominations ready!

The Awards Team

Which one? I tested them before I posted and they all worked then. There was something weird about the 2007 link in the main body of the home page (that's where the last link takes you), but all the others were fine. We're working on getting that one taken care of.

Please let me know which one you tried to follow that was broken.

Okay, I know this is a democracy and all, but none of the things I voted for won, what the hell? all of the things that I felt were subpar beat the things I thought were incredibly well done...now I feel sad. Not a single thing I voted for won...:(

Yeah, that happens from time to time. Team members don't get a vote, but that happened to me the times I voted. The only thing for it is to keep trying for the ones you thought deserved a win and talk up the awards for the next time. The more voters, the better!

Ditto.

It's just math. The short voting window meant those who tried to carefully read everything and consider their decisions carefully were the ones left out in the cold, while the ones who had already decided to vote for their friends had plenty of time.

Send feedback to the authors. That means more than arbitrarily chosen awards anyway.

Next year, how about less categories.

And let's not have drabbles against full length fic. I see some really good stories got ignored in favor of shorter fic.

I was absolutely not expecting my story to win, but I did expect to be beaten by a good story, of which there were many.

What happened?!?

PS: Go ahead, flame me and shun me, but I had to say it.

No flames from here. :-)

One of the most difficult decisions to be made in the process is how to divide up the categories. Break out into more granular categories or try to compress so there are fewer for people to have to deal with? *Personally*, I'd rather see drabbles have their own category as well, but, IIRC, there weren't enough nominated for that to work.

Wow, I never thought this day would get here. I honestly thought you guys had ditched the awards.

May I make a suggestion? It was obvious that this year's awards were way too much for you guys to handle. I mean, we started nominations for these awards a year ago. And now you guys will practically have no break before the next ones begin, which is just ludicrious. And no offense, but the huge stretches of time between nominations, voting and winner announcements made a lot of people lose interest. When you add the short voting period into it, this might explain why a lot of shorter works ended up winning and many wonderful longer works didn't. I too am guilty of reading shorter works first and leaving the longer ones for later and for some categories, I didn't get to the longer ones. I still wanted to vote so I voted for the shorter ones.

Maybe to make the process easier for everybody and to keep interest in these wonderful awards high, have you guys considered splitting up the SGA from the SG-1 and even splitting the media and the fanfic? A lot of people like one show more than the other and enjoy one type of work more than others (I only read SGA fanfic). I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but it seems that you guys bit off a lot more than you could chew this time around and the awards suffered, as did the creators of art and fanfic who got looked over due to time constraints.

The point of these awards is to keep them short and fun, something to look forward to all year, rather than something that stretches out for 12 months with long stretches of waiting. If that enjoyment isn't being felt by the team in charge of the awards and the people participating in them, isn't it time to change things a bit?

I do hope you don't take any of this as an offense! I love the work you guys put into it, I just think things were a bit rough for everybody this time around and quite frankly, I'm not terribly excited about the awards starting up again right away and having to wait a year for the results again.

Oh, no, no offense taken!

These are some *very* interesting suggestions, and I'll be sure to bring them up to the rest of the team.

As to the time delays this time out, we had some *serious* technical issues to work through - issues that *hopefully* won't crop up again (our webmaster has done some incredible coding work this time out, all of which should streamline the process a great deal). We probably won't make many drastic changes this next time out while we see how well the things already set in motion work for us. (And this isn't counting the RL health, family, job, you name it that we all seemed to be hit with - 2007 *bit*! :-)

But, y'know, you could be on to something if it turns out to be an ongoing problem. Thank you for your suggestion. I certainly will pass it on for consideration. It could end up being a good starting point if we decide we need to take the awards in a new direction.

Is there a way to tell first place from honorable mention? Or is there only first place?

I'm too much of a wimp to say this signed in, but at the same time, I feel I need to say it.

I have heard dozens of people say they would have voted, but didn't know the voting had finally opened until it was already closed. Others have said they only voted for stories less than X number of words (generally 2,000 or 3,000). Then there are the folks who say they only voted for adult rated content. As an author of several long, family-friendly stories this time around, I find this discouraging, and I don't feel that these awards can fairly represent the entire fandom for these shows for an entire year's span, considering the number of biases that are caused by the sheer size of the event.

I will not be accepting nominations for my stories in the future, and I know I'm not alone in feeling this way.

No matter how an awards program is run, there will always be people who participate fully, participate partially or don't participate at all. That's simply the nature of the beast. For every person who says they only read short stories, there is one who says they only read long ones. The vote totals for each type were roughly the same, IIRC.

As for representing the entire fandom, we never claimed to do that. We only represent those who choose to participate. That's all any group *can* represent.

As to people not knowing when voting started, we spread the word as far and wide as we could (mailing lists, web sites, LJ, DeviantArt (sp?), others that aren't coming to mind). The team is *always* open to suggestions for where else to spread the word. Feel free to make any suggestions you can think of.

And there's no need to post anonymously. We don't bite. (Well, not unless you ask nicely. :-)

I have a problem with one of the winner's banners and every email I try to send to a link I can find on the Awards site is returned as undeliverable. This includes the link on the recent announcement regarding the banners on the home page. I'm not the only one with this problem. Could a member of the team post a valid email address we can use - please.

Hey, there! I'm not sure why you're getting bounces. I did see your message come through but I'm getting the feeling you didn't see my response. Some days I just *hate* the 'net. :-)

We are reviewing *all* the banners right now. This being a holiday weekend means that bits and pieces of the team are currently out of touch. I've got my fingers crossed that we'll have this cleared up in the next few days. Hang in there!

I'm going to try and resend my response to your email, but if you don't get it by morning (it's 11:25 Sunday night where I am) email me personally at tejas1[at]io[dot]com and we'll see if we can't work out what's what with the communications.

There was an issue with some of the banners. The webmaster is personally taking care of the Multi-media banners and they should be up any moment. Ok, any day. :-) She'd planned to have them finished by the Fourth of July, but life intervened. The fanfiction banners have already been taken care of.
